I only learned a few weeks ago what an Arnold Palmer is—half iced tea, half lemonade—thanks to my Twin Cities friends Sasha and Stephanie. It ranks up there with the world’s great summer thirst quenchers, including Thai iced tea and German Radlers*—beer spiked with a little carbonated lemonade—but indeed, I am watching my caffeine this summer, and also my sugar, and of course beer is mostly out—I know, boring boring boring, but bear with me—so I can’t really drink any of these in quantity.
Enter the Arnold Palmer made with barley iced tea, which I wrote about last summer. I call it the Barnold Palmer. Granted, there is a little sugar in there, but over a ton of ice, mixed with mostly tea, it hardly feels like an irresponsible indulgence. I said it before, but you have to love a tea that can be brewed just by chucking the bag in a pitcher of cold tap water, so go ahead and order the big box.
*Apparently this translates to “cyclist,” referring to how this drink that is essentially beer, is great for after exercise. I love you Germans!
